Assigned "the unessay" as the final project in my utopias and dystopias course and I have had, visual/film essays, audio essays with musical compositions, short stories, films, analyses of eurocentric knowledge, and so much more. I highly recommend this assignment.

The form also allows students to share their favorite readings or topics something that doesn’t always show up in class discussions.

I'd def. second this, after using it with my students in Turkey. It also opened my eyes to the abilities of some incredible students who hadn't been well served by being expected to write orthodox academic essays for every assignment.

I haven't used an un-essay, but I have a "play your joker" (any format) option in my weekly reading journals for a literature class, and I've also found there that "students go deeper because of the freedom of format"

That sounds fantastic!

I really like this. Thanks for sharing! I think I want to try this for an upper-division literature class I’m teaching next semester. One question: do you worry you’re harming students by not assigning an essay they could use for a grad school application?
-
I don’t teach majors, so that’s not a concern. I would still do it even if I did though and give the option of writing a traditional paper.
