I think it’s Offred. The book’s end has Atwood satirizing Orientalism in academia through the “historical notes” section. Though I also think this book has a very white feminist take on reproductive rights, so you could argue it’s Atwood.

My guess, given the afternote: meant to be Offred, while registering that what she (MA) was creating as dystopia was transnationally happening past & present (v. future or fantasy). But that’s a guess. Given that a ‘handmaid’ is about to join the Supreme Court, scary times R US.

There’s a persistent strain of Orientalism and borderline Islamophobia throughout the novel that makes me suspicious that it’s just Offred. 1) before the ceremony there’s a long meditation in Orientalist paintings and harems; 2) the faked Islamic terrorist attack; 1/
