One of the biggest mysteries I’ve been pondering is this: What motivates people who aren’t marginalized to stand up for those who are marginalized? Tbh I think it might take greater courage for people w/ no skin in the game to get involved than those w/ it What do y’all think?

I think this problematically supports saviorism ideologies with the notion that those who have privilege are showing greater courage than those who are being actively discriminated against or marginalized.

I agree. People who are marginalized are also far more likely to be attacked for (verbally, physically, even murdered) than those with privilege when both stand up for the marginalized.

I think you’re both right. I think the marginalized who speak when their bodies are the ones experiencing oppression are more courageous. Thank you.

I also appreciate the discourse on saviorism, too. That’s very important. I do think the marginalized can tell the difference between “saviors” & genuine allies—I am curious what motivates genuine allies, who do put their bodies on the line for other marginalized people.

I’m unclear as to the question here then. Are you asking why people would put themselves out for other people in their society? Isn’t that just basic humanity? Courage is for the oppressed to rise against the oppressor, not for those in the oppressor class to stand for right, IMO

i completely agree w all your statements & honestly feel disappointed and embarrassed that you seem to be the only person voicing this opinion. i’m see a lot of self-congratulatory comments w no recognition that actually, we (the marginalised) have immeasurable courage BECAUSE 1/

Power finds a way to center itself as does whiteness d she both are combined, it’s a doozy. Congratulating yourself on recognizing your privilege and doing something to rectify it is not the allyship we want or deserve. There’s no cookies here.
