I’m going to consult my Brazilian-Portuguese translation from the 70s and see how they handled this bit...oof.
-
This whole scene is grotesque because he keeps fluctuating between child and adult woman in his description.

Look it only gets more on the nose in the art museum scene featuring the painting called, of course, Puberty.
-
That scene preps is for this one. Reminds me of Spielberg and Lucas wanting to write a 12-15 year old as the seductress for Indians Jones, in the first film.

There's a lot I like about Dick but: The way he writes women is the WORST thing about him. He's creepy and doesn't seem always to see us as quite human.
-
This for me is a deal breaker. His imagined futures are playgrounds by and for men. Women are necessary inconveniences.

Ugh yeah he is awful when it comes to the women in his stories. These problems also got carried over into Blade Runner (and other PKD-based films), which gave my students A LOT to talk about when I would teach it.
-
The women here are either nags, caretakers, or sexual objects. There personhood relevant only insofar as it serves and services Rick.
