Would loved to have heard your students reactions.

Mostly my students were disturbed and uncomfortable, tbh. I couldn’t decide if it was a good uncomfortable or not. If you do write about it, I’ll have to think harder about what their reactions were and share them (I’m sure I have notes). I haven’t taught it since.

You’ve kind of made me consider putting it on my Othello syllabus for the spring.

I do remember I’d wished I were teaching it alongside Othello!

Ania Loomba presented a talk at the Globe on this play and Othello in 2018. I don’t know if she’s published that but the echoes are there.

I also remember that the play led to a conversation about how many theater critics are white men. My students were shocked that a play with such disturbing violence was award-winning and wanted to know what it was like to see it performed.

I missed seeing this on stage that’s why I got the audiobook. Even that was disturbing.

You know, come to think of it, my students didn’t have the same reaction to Nottage’s Sweat, which I taught in 2020 and which also culminates in violence. They found it tragic but timely. I wonder: is it the domestic part? The plays’ settings? Characters? Or 2020 vs 2013ish?

It might be all of those. The domestic violence is so brutal, especially in the stage directions.

Anyway, thanks for giving me a reason to think about Disgraced again. I look forward to hearing how it goes with your class and reading your essay.

Thank you for sharing your experience!! So many folks have told me how great it was and I thought I was missing something as I read it.
