Just listened to the Disgraced (audiobook) by Ayad Akhtar. Feeling ambivalent about it’s treatment of Islam and Muslims. It’s a problem that non-Muslims are the only ones allowed to think positively of the religion and that too as art or tradition and not theology. 1/

You know, come to think of it, my students didn’t have the same reaction to Nottage’s Sweat, which I taught in 2020 and which also culminates in violence. They found it tragic but timely. I wonder: is it the domestic part? The plays’ settings? Characters? Or 2020 vs 2013ish?

It might be all of those. The domestic violence is so brutal, especially in the stage directions.
