Just listened to the Disgraced (audiobook) by Ayad Akhtar. Feeling ambivalent about it’s treatment of Islam and Muslims. It’s a problem that non-Muslims are the only ones allowed to think positively of the religion and that too as art or tradition and not theology. 1/

I did one production and don’t think I could ever play Amir again. It was emotionally and physically just too taxing

That role is so demanding. The self hatred of that character is a lot to read too, especially when you are a Pakistani Muslim immigrant.

I taught this play in a race/gender drama class when it first came out, and I’d wished I had more time and resources to process it. It was an intense few classes. I would love to see your article on it!

My initial thought was that Muslims have a relationship to their religion that is not in the context of 9/11. And that the only person allowed to live anything about Islam was a WW who wanted to extract things from it to feed her own artistic ambitions. Hopefully more to come.
