I know. I despise such forms of militarism and nationalism but this speech just gets me every time. Rhetoric is dangerous.

I think it annoys me because it is "peak Henry" in its extreme disingenuousness, one more way that he offsets responsibility for his own decisions. He never met a "brother" that he didn't want to disown, execute or send to his death (all in the name of "brotherhood" of course).

Sorry; I really don't like Henry!

Me too. My head says it shouldn't but my heart melts at the rhetoric.

I taught this yesterday, and told my students that this play is an awful dick-measuring contest where men just make up reasons to go to war, and the Chorus/Henry have the beautiful moments I've ever read.

Always. Ditto the "I am Welsh, you know" moments. I think Branagh is a total prat, cannot stand him, and yet weirdly, always seem to get something in my eye watching that particular scene...

took a northern Irishman to get it, I think, about what's going on: never happened in previous performance histories I can find. (Sorry to bore w/ previous publications, but fascinating Welsh-i.e.,not English-complexity in the scene.) Helps having Ian Holm do a briliiant Fluellen
