I'm always more than a little bewildered by the combination in these critiques of an implicit agreement that race is a social/cultural category that developed over time and a resistance to new work that would refine our understanding of that development.

It is a paradoxical position that seems to affirm that conversations about race belong to an other place, and cannot be central to the canon, even though the disclaimer offered exposes that to be a fiction.

They just want to assert their authority to decide what counts as the acceptable academic discourse to earn the fantasy credits required for career advancement. You are trying to subvert their control and authority. That's completely unacceptable.

The careful study of historical context is often discouraged because that's a type of historical research. Actual historical research can produce the wrong answer -- since it depends on immutable historical facts. So it's generally considered best to avoid that.
