the last production of Othello I saw elicited the same inappropriate laughter you referenced, @DrDadabhoy. This was a production on campus, so I had my class go, and the laughter was a major point of discussion.
Saw the one at the Globe with Mark Rylance as Iago and Andre Holland as Othello. Same problem. Saw several regional ones and it was the same thing, even at the African American Shakespeare Company’s performance.

the one I referenced was a company that tours college campuses and was probably the second performance of Othello on campus in the last 10 years or so. My husband (not an academic) noticed these issues and said he won't see Othello again.

He’s a smart man. The play is better in your head but for the exact opposite reasons than what Hazlitt and Lamb suggest.

that was the very production I talked about in that paper! Such a strange, unsettling (to say the least) experience that for me really overwhelmed anything else about the production, which I’m sure had a lot going for it
