Excellent session from @DrDadabhoy and @prof_nmehdiz that was full of practical advice about classroom strategies for anti-racist pedagogy, experience in how to design (and re-design!) courses, and deep thinking about how to excavate early modern discourses of race #FolgerCRC

Especially salutary was their upfront and direct response to some of the queasy-making pedagogical questions- "but I don't know this stuff already", (learn it!) "what if I get it wrong?" (admit your mistakes and do it differently next time), "isn't this anachronistic?" (nope)

another basic claim that was made: *everyone* is located within the matrix of race, not just BIPOCs, so it's in the interest of every student to reflect on the consequences of that both historically & personally, and thus it's just not a topic that only Xs or Ys can talk about

my "takeaway": Shakespeare studies *will* turn scholars into custodians of a racist inheritance unless we actively bring up other ways to care about Shakespeare & find other things to do with Shakespeare in a classroom than reify whiteness and tiptoe around race- it's up to us

+ for white scholars in Shakespeare studies this means we have to 1) learn how to relay and transmit this work without "Columbusing" as we do so 2) assume that it will take time and labor to do that and 3) re-calibrate syllabi & classroom lesson plans so that this has substance
