I think it's really important to tell students that email communication with me is professional correspondence & I try to offer gentle reminders when they fall into more casual habits. I worry that in doing so I'm upholding some form of power and authority. 1/ #AcademicTwitter

and it also speaks to the complexities (and contradictions) of our roles - co-partners in the production of certain types of knowledge, but authorities in the exercise of other types. IME (v different cultural context) less privileged students tend to be more formal

It has varied for me re: privilege and background. I also think having email on your phone also contributes to the lack of formality. No one wants to type that much on the small screen. Lots of variables.
