I think it's really important to tell students that email communication with me is professional correspondence & I try to offer gentle reminders when they fall into more casual habits. I worry that in doing so I'm upholding some form of power and authority. 1/ #AcademicTwitter

Their professionalization is key, I feel responsible for that as well!
@soundingoutblog has a great assignment she uses to help students learn about the importance of email etiquette/conventions -
Thanks for the tip! I hope Jennifer will share her assignment.

I usually gently remind them that whilst I am fine with informality (a position that requires a certain privilege), others may not be

Yes, I think it's hard to navigate etiquette when its shifting among faculty members. I let them know my expectations in the syllabus, but it doesn't always stick. And I feel awkward doing it through email, but I always do remind them.

I try to keep all of this in mind too. With BIPOC students, or really anyone socialized "outside" of WASP cultural codes, I try to frame these things in terms of context-specific code-switching as much as "professionalizing." Feels more honest that way

This. Thank you for sharing how you frame it, because professionalizing isn't enough and I am trying to make transparent the unspoken rules and expectations of academia.

This modeling is crucial & can support broader communication about genre conventions in general--how they're formed & contested, what they're based on. I've found this book helpful for discussing emails and other academic "supporting genres." https://www.press.umich.edu/3073304/navigating_academia …

Exactly what we're doing now in comp--comparing these bc I want to get across tht "professionalism" isn't just correct spelling/grammar (which neither one has) but also not acting entitled/overly familiar (which 1st gets wrong) & being clear in your purpose (which 2nd gets right)pic.twitter.com/zrl5wHuiIb
