I recognize every word of this essay. In my bones. I remember a family member once asking me what part of my body I liked best, and I genuinely couldn’t think of a single part of my self I liked, let alone loved. Indians are brutal to women about their appearance.https://twitter.com/CatapultStory/status/1148245467928694784 …

I think this kind of body shaming and policing crosses borders. I was actively taught how to hate myself by well-meaning aunties and mean-spirited uncles and male cousins in Pakistan.

So, more of a South Asian commonality, then? I know I can testify to the self hatred dinned into me in India, as both child and adult. So many aunties with their sly, cutting comments. So many men with their assessing, hot eyes.

Yes you’re exactly right. Male comments on your our bodies are another way they try to exert their control over them and their desire for them. So much unwanted attention.
