Read They Were Her Property by Stephanie E. Jones-Rogers, on slave owing white women. This book offers a much needed corrective to the ways in which white women have been positioned as innocent in the system of racial domination and enslavement. https://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300218664/they-were-her-property …

This book intervenes in the romance of the south narrative, particularly in its framing of white women as innocent and childlike in the face of the institution of enslavement. Jones-Rogers shows exactly how competent, calculating, and cruel ww slave owners could be.

She also exposes the blind spots of historical analysis that has tended to treat the business of enslavement as essentially masculinist, thereby bolstering the false narrative of white women's racial innocence in this project.

Dude... people actually believe that?! I mean, I haven't read this book, but even I've heard of Delphine LaLaurie!

Spectacular cases like LaLaurie are easily dismissed as aberrations in the historical record. The point is that history has deliberately occluded white women's ready & eager participation in enslavement because of the special status accorded to them in racist patriarchal systems.
