To repeat: if any of us in the UK had wanted to have our students watch a filmed production of Antony and Cleopatra in which Cleopatra is Black more than two years ago, that wouldn’t have been possible. But yeah, universal.

There is historical discussion about the Real Cleopatra of Greek lineage... In Shakespeare’ she figures as the Orientalized Other... implicitly racialized - “ labeled Gypsy” is what actors of color show?

The last known native Egyptian pharaoh was Nectanebo II, overthrown by the Persians in 342 BC. There's no evidence Cleopatra was even partially native Egyptian/Nubian/African, she was a colonial European of the incest-practicing Ptolemaic dynasty, a Macedonian Greek royal family.pic.twitter.com/429bZDd6jW

Cleopatra was Greek.

And in Shakespeare’s play, which is what we’re talking about, she describes herself as ‘black’ and is described by others as ‘tawny’. Historical accuracy didn’t interest Shakespeare, and it doesn’t much interest me in this discussion.
