I wonder what might have been possible if institutions of HE had accepted that the pandemic would mean prolonged campus closures. How they might have supported our teaching, supported our care-giving, and supported our students rather than remain in the land of wishful thinking.

I'm at a religious institution, and so many of our faculty do not believe unions are the answer. We have a small group that has maintained a connection to AAUP for many years, but in the end, that relationship wields no power.

And I’m at a large public in the South where “right-to-work” adds it’s complications. The action against labor in the last 30 years has been too successful.I know there’s an effort under way in my state. I hope we can find a way.

Like my attempts to unionize as a grad student, too many here think unions are somehow not appropriate for higher education. I have not been able to engage we with this belief and its consequences.
