2007 Interviewer to Chiwetel Ejiofor: “As a black actor, does he find Othello lurking in the back of his mind, like K2 out there, waiting to be conquered?” Man, it's not even like they're pretending. They [white peepo] really do think it's the black man's Hamlet.

The comparison is interesting for another reason, K2 is a mountain, a natural structure to be overcome by human strength and endurance, in a colonial mindset. Othello is not natural it is a white man, Shakespeare’s construction of black identity. 1/

There’s no there, there. But the comparison naturalizes something about blackness in Othello, and suggests a way to conquer or control or succumb to that construction. It’s not in any way critical about what it means for a black man to inhabit that character 2/

To be isolated in that role and to be underserved not only by the character’s internalization of the anti-black society in which he lives but to daily revisit the violence of the other characters on Othello and his blackness. The actor is being tasked, daily, 3/

To take on white supremacy and to lose. A better comparison is Sisyphus, rather than K2. 4/4

Yep. (Can you quote a tweet in a book?) Yes, that is exactly what it is. They have all been set up to fail. And the press’ narratives just move the goalposts. I did just think I’d only focus on Martina’s Bianca in that prod, but then I came across that “question”

I think the nature of
#ShakeRace engagement on Twitter means that you actually can quote a tweet in a book. The intellectual rigor is still there as is the methodology and the claim.

@The_Globe’s 2018 Shakespeare and Race festival organized by@ProfFarahKC had a great session with Black actors who had played Othello, moderated by Ayanna Thompson. They talked about the trauma and isolation of the role, its dehumanizing affects on the Black actor.#ShakeRace 1/3 vastausta 0 uudelleentwiittausta 3 tykkäystä
You might be able to find my live tweets from that session. It was so good. 2/2 #ShakeRace
