Trying to think & write about the state of early modern character criticism, in relation to drama but also other genres. Can anyone recommend work, whether historical or theoretical, focused on concepts of character in premodern critical race studies? #ShakeRace #RaceB4Race

Thanks for the note on Coleridge. Interesting to think about the methods by which Romantic criticism inscribed ‘Shakespearean character’ as white before handing it on as a concept to later generations of critics.

See also Ian Smith's Shakespeare Quarterly article "We are Othello," for more on Romantic construction of white normativity, particularly in relation to Hamlet.
