I think that The Merchant of Venice was a bad play when it was written, and it hasn't gotten any better since. Bad structure, bad characters, bad jokes, bad play.

You just have to fight the play so hard to make it "about antisemitism," and even then it doesn't work. It is a catalog of the varieties of human cruelty, and that's not my idea of fun or useful or engaging.

But the fact that Ayanna Thompson's favorite play is Titus Andronicus makes me deliriously happy. Because talk about a play that actually is what Merchant claims to be...
