I actually don't know if subbing out the "race" moments in the plays is the answer here. What does that do, except whitewash the play? This is something I’m thinking about a lot in my work on sexual violence: the bones of these plays are the problem, so when we make a cosmetic change (like editing out slurs) in an effort to “fix” the play, we’re not addressing the whole issue. I call it “incomplete dramaturgy”

“Incomplete” because most ppl making those superficial changes have (I think) good intentions — but they don’t finish the job. Some plays need gutting if what you want is a race/gender-conscious and responsible production.
