Why couldn’t that woman say brown or Asian? Why did she say “funny tint/tinge”? White people’s own racial awareness and their understanding of how race works is why we arrive at these moments of racial incoherence and denialism. 1/

Her whole point was that anyone can experience oppression. No one denies that. Racial oppression, however, is different and can interlock with other forms. And this moment is not the time to deflect from that issue, which is what wyte people are comfortable doing. 2/
