“English as a discipline has a long history of providing aesthetic rationalizations for colonization, exploitation, extraction, and anti-Blackness.” Ahem, to so many of our colleagues. This is how you do it. https://english.uchicago.edu/news-events?fbclid=IwAR2KSZV0lDxAJRbC4g9q9qFEE0xAlCNHMDD8r8poHrp521gBrSoMDwsM514 …

Is the dept planning on reframing their programs? Most English programs are framed within the British/American binary. I would ve interested to know exactly where they will place these courses. Also, requiring one course in African American literature doesn't decenter whiteness.

You can also teach American literature by decentering whiteness.

Isn't African American literature American literature? I'm confused.

You’re saying one course in AmAm literature. I’m saying you can teach American literature and still decenter whiteness. Meaning an American literature that centers non-whites without having to be marked by racial and ethnic designations.

And I agree- the lens of am lit should de enter whiteness. I’m not sure how many classes do this though. Certainly good individual classes. But as a whole? I still get student evals that say- to much Black lit in this course. Supposed to be am lit. Yeah.

I get these same responses in my evals for Am lit courses as well. One said, "This isnt multicultural Am lit, its Am lit."

I agree that this remains a problem. Maybe those course could be renamed, white American literature? I’m only half kidding here.

I've been converting anthologies to datasets to see patterns and have recently thought I should code general am lit anthologies as PWAM- like PWI. I am also working with AFAM lit anthologies. What do you all think? It is an accurate description when you look at inclusion.

I agree that anthologies do a lot of ideological work in yoking white to American, BUT we are also working against expectations of American literature established in high school. The frame students come to us with matters a lot. I hope this moment facilitates a change there too.
