Reading The Shining for the first time, dismayed to find "the Magical Negro" trope being used. Also the phrase, "he had come to terms with his blackness," which puts the burden of racism on the oppressed. Disappointing.

I was under the impression that the term ‘magical negro’ was originally used in reference to Stephen King’s reliable use of this trope, I could be wrong, but it does run throughout his entire body of work

He originated it? I didn’t know that. Not surprising from what I know of his works.

I looked it up after I tweeted that bc I was curious lol, and it looks like Spike Lee came up with it, specifically in reference to Green Mile and some other contemporary films in the early 2000s. So King’s work was at least involved in the discussion from the very beginning!
