I want to know what qualifications this person has to write about race and tolerance in the US in 2020. What reading has she done? What are her credentials besides her celebrity? This is what white mediocrity looks like & how it’s rewarded. There are no purple people, Kiki.

That’s the nonsense they teach in US suburban elementary schools. When my sons were 7 & 9, one asked me what I was reading so I told them about Baldwin, “the great Black writer.” The younger one cut me off, “That’s racist!” He’d been taught that noticing someone’s race was racist

I had to tell my college students that it was ok to say that person or character was Black in texts, and that pointing out race was not inherently racist, as we have been taught through colorblind ideology.

They never learn a way to talk about it, a vocabulary or ethical framework in which to explore and understand the complexity. That’s not accidental.

Indeed, it is not. It's also why we find ourselves in this moment. Racial ignorance and racial illiteracy. It also doesn't help that we go to schools that are as segregated as they were before Brown V. Board of Education. Lack of knowledge and exposure.

More segregated, something that my wife and I are ashamed to have thoughtlessly contributed to. The moment I realized my complicity in that evil, incidentally, involves the local cops harassing black boys on bicycles.

It’s especially important to think about our neighborhoods & racism. I see a lot of people proud that their white neighborhood is having a BLM march and I hope they’re also considering how BLM informs or doesn’t where they live and where their kids go to school.
