I know that. The language we have is not always helpful for communicating both the continuities and the changes, and as historians we get hung up on that.

I’m so glad that I was taught by feminist historians at a department of cultural history. In 90’s Finland the disciplines were still quite divided by politics, so we were all considered suspicious lefties anyway.

It’s been a long road. It gets really frustrating. But as a 30 year veteran of interdisciplinary conversations on gender, as historians take on issues of pre-modern race, there will be differences.

And that work is so important. I’m glad we’re finally having these conversations about race, as it was so frustrating say, 10-15 yrs ago, and felt really lonely sometimes. I think historians have had difficulties listening and learning too, the impulse is to ‘explain’.
