NO. I work all of the time—it has gotten to the point where my academic work has suffered greatly. This is such a bad take. Don’t do this. https://twitter.com/drewmckevitt/status/1258407555606417408 …

Is it possible your experience is not typical, or that the experience of anyone working at MIT is not representative of the vast majority of higher ed institutions?

No. I haven’t always worked at MIT. You’re totally belittling the work of staff at your own institution. We are all in this together—also I would never attack the work of other people. Administrative work helps to make your work possible.

On the contrary I think our work as faculty is the sine qua non for the existence of the administrative class, which often acts as if that's not the case. But I would certainly understand how that might not describe the experience of faculty and administrators at MIT.

UP worker at an underfunded public state system here. Surely you can see how drawing a strict line b/w the white-collar work you do as faculty & that of others at yr institution or elsewhere would be offensive/counterproductive. The so-called admin class is far from homogeneous.

Yes, to achieve the vision of a more humane, accessible higher ed that most faculty support would actually require a significant investment in administrative (and non-admin service and support) positions to staff and maintain the required resources.

We just need more faculty, thanks.

You can make the argument that we need more faculty, more teachers with job security, without attacking other people many of whom also have PhDs who continue to work in academia in non-faculty roles. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
