The “disrobing” or “unveiling” of Muslim women is a long-standing Orientalist European trope. Muslim women as objects of desire that must hide their beauty because of the misogynistic tyranny of their religion, and non-Muslim men positioned as saviors. This is the same trope present in the
@netflix show@EliteNetflix. Nadia is denied a fulfilling romantic relationship until she stops wearing the hijab. It would have been groundbreaking and courageous of the writers to have her fall in love and keep her hijab. Fully accepted.1 vastaus 1 uudelleentwiittaus 2 tykkäystä -

I also wish that all representations of Muslim womanhood in western media didn’t exhibit such veiling fetish. Not all Muslim women wear the veil.

Exactly. Also, not all Muslims are brown or black. There are many Muslims - whether born or converts - who are white. I never see this in the media. Let alone non-binary queer Muslims and/or those w disabilities. They had an opportunity and failed to meet the moment.

It’s also very rare to see Black American Muslims represented in US media. The diversity of Islam is completely ignored by narratives that shape it only in the context of the War on Terror.

Other than portraying the militancy of the Nation of Islam a la Malcolm X, for example, which also misses the point - and trajectory - of his message.

Black American Muslim representation is important because it's been ignored in favor of Arab and South Asian. They were here before many of us were and are not part of the way Islam in America is represented by non Black Muslims and non-Muslisms.

Black representation is ignored. Period. This is compounded when looked through an intersectional lens (i.e. adding religion to skin color). Yes, some of the first Muslim Americans were enslaved. Their contributions devalued, overlooked, and forgotten.
