Reading generously, it seems to be saying "I use their words to discuss their thoughts, but 'correct' terms to discuss reality." But this footnote is the only part I'm able to see.
Wow. And yes, this is just bad research/practice.
I feel like a huge asshole because I use that term in a chapter on the Renegado and cite that exact fn and the logic you noted above. I had questions about it, but deferred to the white editor/“expert.” Definitely won’t use it again. Thanks for pointing out how messed up it is.
Kate, thanks for sharing this. I’ve read and assigned this edition multiple times and am just now thinking about how problematic some of the choices are here. And of course when it’s a big name editor in our field we will defer to their expertise. 1/
