I absolutely agree. I also think it’s easier for people to fixate on race within religious perspectives. Which is why they focus more on “complexion” than racial issues for characters of color.

I think it’s actually a racist move. The focus on complexion is designed to save Shakespeare from the charge of racism but reproduces the kind of racist thinking Coleridge displays when he says that Shax couldn’t have written a “Negro” Moor so he must have been Arab.
