Isn't it racial thinking to use the evidence of European distinction btwn white and black Moors to show that race is fluid? In other words, when you divide the ethnic category of Moor into color, are you not falling into race? Isn’t this racial formation? #IAmWriting #ShakeRace

Yep. It’s spelled Mohr in German but sounds the same. It’s considered derogatory, especially by marginalized people in German-speaking countries. To give you an idea, this term was prevalent pre-18th c. and was replaced by the N-word in German.

Thanks for explaining and contextualizing. I think in the English and Iberian context it definitely connotes Islamic/Muslim identity, but it has much currency outside of our period.

In German it’s connected to Islamophobia and derogatory speech against any persons who aren’t white. There’s still some remnants in a couple of desserts etc. (Mohr im Hemd, Mohrsküß) but people are pushing back against that now as well.
