Ok, I'm going to ask. When Saturninus says that Tamora is "A goodly lady, trust me, of the hue/That I would choose were I to choose anew" (1.1.265-6) does he mean white? I have never read that as white. Whiteness is usually not a hue, is it? It's a lily or something. #ShakeRace

Yes, see Francesca Royster's brilliant article "White Limed Walls: Whiteness and Gothic Extremism in Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus" in SQ, 2000.

Yes, it is a great article. But there is a sense in the play in which the Goths are other (conquered in war, presented as gifts to the emperor) and "hue" at least to me feels more ambiguous than white.

But later, Aaron explicitly makes the link right? "Is Black so base a hue?"

Which, I think supports the notion of a spectrum that puts into questions Roman whiteness.

Agreed! Just to be clear, I was not reading Tamora as black. But "hue" does mark her as other, (as Royster points out). I suppose I had something more like brown in mind. I agree that whiteness does need to be seen as racialized.

I don't have great contextual evidence for this but have read her color as whiter than the Romans. S dramatizing the collapse of Mediterranean rule and forecasting the rise of northern rule with shades of white supremacy.

It is a great article. I'm interest in Tamora and what is going on with her revenge. S may see her in away she does not. Destroying Titus and his family is her goal. But not just as a mother. She's a prisoner, a gift to the emporer. Marriage doesn't, I don't think, change that.
