When you're having a class discussion, and one aspect of that discussion includes the intersection of race and gender, and a student asks (from a sincere place) whether race *really* is a factor - don't open that question up for debate. Answer that question: Yes, race matters.

Minoritized students need to witness an ally who will advocate for their histories & experiences in front of the class & students who don't have that lived experience need you to teach them. It's not the responsibility of your students of color (or their allies) to do your job.

When you give the impression that, for example, white women & black women experience discrimination in the workplace in an equitable way by opening the discussion up for students, you're suggesting that there isn't a firm answer. There is a firm answer, & you need to provide it.
