I have to a bit honest here. Although I’m enjoying being at the #RaceB4Race conference, I do find it isolating. I’ve been trained as a medievalist, written a dissertation on a medieval topic but I still feel like an outsider, perhaps because I’m not in English. My 2 cents.

I feel that, as a trained medievalist in German and Scandinavian literatures !!

Yeah I was the one who commented about doing pan Germanic philology. It’s bringing back memories of presenting OE and being at other medieval sessions over the years. I’m constantly doing work outside medieval lit and with other disciplines but this isolation is rough.

So what can
#RaceB4Race do to help with that isolation? I don't mean to make you find yr own solution, but isolation takes many forms-- the paradigms don't speak to one's interest? hard to meet ppl becuz ppl seem to know each other? questions aren't being received well?3 vastausta 0 uudelleentwiittausta 8 tykkäystä -

I think it’s mostly that since I’m new to these conferences and have only been following some of the scholars on twitter, I don’t have those personal and professional connections that others have. I’m also early career and feel consistently pushed out of medieval studies.

Race before Race, as its title suggests is about the study of race in the premodern. It is open to all but it centers the scholarship of BIPOC.
