Some reflections on #MLA2020 and conference practices: 1. When designing a panel diversity should be a guiding principle. This means that you think of the identity categories of your speakers as well as other invisible markers of diversity like ability and 1/

And rank. Graduate students, ECR, contingent faculty, independent scholars, alt-academics should all be given priority not just consideration. Moreover, let’s not have any more panels with only folks from R1s particularly if they are 2/

“State of the field” panels. You know who’s on the front lines of the state of the field? Folks who teach at regional institutions. Their voices should be asked to lead these conversations. Two: let’s all just agree to stand and deliver our papers with 3/

Here I am slightly less convinced. If I prepare a talk, I prepare a talk, not a written paper (the written paper is likely to be less tentative, less risky…). Are you asking people like me to do two things (the preparation for the oral presentation and the written paper)?

The convention in my field is that the talk is a paper. So if your practice is different how can you accommodate for accessibility?

I use slides and hand-outs and blog about my ideas, but indeed I have not thought of a way to make a talk accessible exactly as it is to a each audience. What would you recommend (other than writing down)?

Disability scholars have noted that providing descriptions of what’s in the slides is helpful, so that can go on the handout. You might also want to have some large print copies of the handouts as well.
