I struggle with this because I do a lot of my scholarship in public. I share works in progress on my website as well as course design and syllabi. I do this because I want to show people the many ways we can build a diverse and inclusive premodern. 1/ https://t.co/ykdmxzVCja

I’m not naive enough to believe that my ideas are protected but I think our digital publications whether Twitter threads or web articles are important ways were advancing knowledge and doing public humanities. I wouldn’t like my ideas to be lifted 2/

Or plagiarized, however. So I’m wondering how we create checks and balances or if we just remain more secretive because as BIPOC scholars we have more to lose. 3/3

I respect Adam’s decision & everyone has to make the decision that makes them comfortable & works for them, but I’ve been thinking a lot about that tweet for the last few hours b/c it’s infuriating how bad behavior by others are forcing brilliant POC scholars to make that choice.

I’ve tended to be very public and claim space that way and also to talk a lot out in writing with friends - doesn’t stop the plagiarism but at least it gets time stamps and dates... our receipts.

But I think that works better when one is already in some kind of privileged position - like having a reputation or a “name” or tenure because it probably makes people think twice and also opens up more possibility for recourse.

So the people I really worry about is the junior, untenured, independent, and/or contingent scholars - who are most vulnerable in so many different ways, particularly to having their ideas stolen.

I’m also not tenured yet, but I’m also at an institution that supports the “creativity” of my scholarship so I don’t feel the same demands of precarity (perhaps foolishly) but I hope to utilize that privilege in any way I can for more vulnerable folks.

It’s about knowing your institution and your risk tolerance... I rarely held my tongue before I got tenure because I felt like I didn’t have to (and would have been bad at it) but it’s definitely a personal decision.
