It has so many 5
reviews. The novel basically reproduces patriarchal misogyny in the persistent himpathy it demands towards unlikable male characters while castigating women trapped by the customs and mores of their culture. Spioiled and entitled men 2/

Are not inherently interesting. Their man pain is rooted in the fact that they aren’t always the center of attention it don’t always get their way. This is lazy writing. What else was lazy was the total lack of character development of the second sister. 3/

She was given no POV and was simply a sounding board for every other character’s development. What I can’t forgive is that the patriarchy is never challenged: it is internalized by supposedly strong and educated female characters to the extent that they 5/

Blame themselves for the failings of the lead male character. We are constantly told how wonderful he is with no character development that actually exhibits it. He never takes responsibility for his actions because all of the women are quick to step in 5/

And blame themselves for all of his bad behavior and moral failings. We all chafe under the rigidity of our immigrant family and orthodox religious or cultural norms but that doesn’t mean we get free passes to be assholes and ruin our sister’s wedding 6/

By getting drunk in public so that she can’t have two things she wants, a family photo on her wedding day and her brother doing the traditional send off of the bride. He’s such a loser and screw up yet the novel is determined to cast him as the victim. 7/

The only thing I appreciated here was that the novel featured a community that doesn’t get much attention, Shia Muslims. Other than that, there are better immigrant and Muslim stories out there. 8/8

Because all women think alike? That’s lazy. She’s an overlooked middle child who could have offered better commentary in the goings on in the family. The book is steeped in and complicit with very problematic forms of misogyny. It’s the mom’s fault after all.

It’s actually not. We are constantly told that he’s terrific and never given any evidence of it. Why is he a screw up? Because his sister didn’t support him when he tried to cheat on a test. Why does he do drugs? Because he’s misunderstood. About what tho?
