I've been asking myself the same ?? On one hand, *need* talk about whiteness/WS as foundational to my field (medieval studies) & how that conditions the field's demographics, assumptions, approaches, (mis)uses... but at the same time, can you decenter something by centering it?

1) I wouldn't say that exploring how WS is foundational to the field is centring whiteness so much as grappling with it; you have to acknowledge and understand the problem to fix it.

Much recent race work by white scholars centers whiteness without meaningfully engaging with the work done by BIPOC scholars. And if masculinity studies in the domain of gender does the same with feminist scholars then that’s a problem too.

Well... obviously? I thought we were talking about people doing this work in good faith.

We are. I don’t think DiAngelo is working in bad faith but look at what her work does.
