In the paper and the Q&A Utz said the the two "sides" (ie ws & bipoc) used similar rhetoric and social media tactics. And said bipoc were damaging conversation, the field et al by demanding people adhere to a "party line" thtat he didn't specify.

Language uses such as extreme, slacktivst, outrage culture , misplaced anger, etc is in itself inflammatory. Not saying they cannot use it. Just saying the rest of us can disagree and voice that disagreement.

I agree with you completely. And I support 100% your right to voice that disagreement, Emily. I thought that your comments at the panel were great. My only point in all of this has been that I'm glad the panel occurred, and I hope it leads to more dialogue, not less.

And, again, I wish that the makeup of the panel had been different. I certainly hope that the makeup of future panels is different.

But have you spoken to THEM about this,
@profwmsmith? You've come to various scholars on "this side" repeatedly to push back on narratives and urge compassion for these scholars, but are you doing that work with them as well?4 vastausta 1 uudelleentwiittaus 22 tykkäystä -

It's so often WOC like Dr. MRO who are framed as "angry" (something you said she is yesterday), while white scholars like these who have a long history of online harassment and mockery get described as "sad." And it's always BIPOC who are asked to reach out and be compassionate.

I hate to keep jumping in here, but situation dredged up years-old anxieties abt "conversation." In the 1990s, my dept had meetings FOR OVER A YEAR abt revising the curriculum. They were civil & ppl constantly asked more senior/more traditional faculty how they were w/changes

When it overwhelmingly passed, these ppl 1st went to admin who said "well, u had a vote" and then to the conservative media where we then got sliced & diced by right & left, & got hate mail for months. 1 of the ring leaders had the nerve to say he loved me as a colleague.

After a public mtg, a senior told me she was afraid to go home by herself. There was no FB, no Twitter and it was still awful. I had all kinds of stress symptoms. tldr: convo is not neutral. Stop asking BIPOC to assume risks & costs you don't have to.

It's 100.0? Some of those younger people are now ratfuckers in natl politics. And SM has made it much worse. Finally, a Shakespeare Association talk I gave on it-- never published, so still more unrewarded labor.http://bit.ly/GUNiceGirl
