yes, pretty much! i see it as a 2-pronged problem. RSA is huge already (have seen panels with 3 people listening); SAA involves a lot of skipping out while other seminars are on. Seems easy for everyone to basically ghost on the whole Attending The Conf part to catch up w pals

that said I also will be the first to admit i find the SAA to be cliquey and hard, and the RSA to be huge and overwhelming so the thought of both of those together is exacerbating anxieties around a combined conf +

+ i think plenty of people are committed to at least being part of the mega conference & looking outside their own fields. It is entirely possible I'm just projecting my own experiences of both conferences onto this idea!

Hey, I was on one of those RSA panels- with the added bonus ot being in the room you had to walk through to get to the panel everyone wanted to see

But I totally see your point about the worst aspects of both.

having to be on the way to the more popular panel is the WORST OF ALL. but yeah: for those of us really committed to interdisciplinarity i think it has the potential to be a positive exp, but will need some careful joint planning.

Planning from the membership as well. I would love to see some “reading sessions” where we discuss a single book from our various fields.

Same. And mixed-discipline roundtables encouraged.

Given how the RSA is an interdisciplinary organisation, I’m not entirely sure what it gains from joining forces: I can see how AHA-MLA means cognate disciplines can enter conversation with each other, but an SAA-RSA feels like it runs the risk of closing down discussion.

And honestly I’m not trying to stan SAA over RSA or cheerlead collaboration (Not going to lie, for many BIPOC, a large grouping means a larger sphere of micro aggressions), but conferences are often valuable beyond their mandate.

When AHA and MLA were in Chicago last year. The idea was that there would be a lot of cross pollination, but that didn’t happen.
