I went to see Othello with my cousin and told her to note if there was any inappropriate laughter. Spoiler alert: there was SO much, like when Iago tells Othello to strangle her. People actually guffawed. #ShakeRace #OthelloLaugh

Listening for laughter during a performance of Othello is like the world’s most depressing Rorschach test. I’ve laughed during productions, sure, but it’s been at the bits where Desdemona is taking the piss out of Iago or everyone takes the piss out of Rodrigo.

Absolutely. There were funny moments that are supposed to be so, but this production gave too much free reign to Iago so he didn't come across as sinister. People laughed every time he was on stage.

I can't imagine a funny Iago. Well, I suppose I can, but...

Shakes' Iago is about as funny as Disney's.pic.twitter.com/QQhsN2zKIo

Coda to this thread: I was talking to my husband about my class' discussion of Othello the other night, and my 3-year-old asked what Iago the bird did that was so bad. Now I wonder how much she overheard and what strange kid version of Othello I'll hear about six weeks from now.
