I went to see Othello with my cousin and told her to note if there was any inappropriate laughter. Spoiler alert: there was SO much, like when Iago tells Othello to strangle her. People actually guffawed. #ShakeRace #OthelloLaugh

Absolutely. He already gets more time with the audience. No need to make him seem fun or cool on top of that.(And I wouldn’t want to see any production that makes him seem right about things.) An Iago given too much sway means a production is favoring moments over a coherent whole

This is very true, that privileging all of these moments, particularly the comic gulling of Roderigo throughout and cutting the lines where Iago notes that he now has to kill him, undermines the coherence of the show.
