I went to see Othello with my cousin and told her to note if there was any inappropriate laughter. Spoiler alert: there was SO much, like when Iago tells Othello to strangle her. People actually guffawed. #ShakeRace #OthelloLaugh

To me, responding ‘strangle her on your bed for the symbolism’ seems like an escalation, in part because it suggests he’s put forethought into it. Of course, a lot of these lines will go down to how they’re handled. Not every production gets laughs for “honest Iago” after all.

Yes, I agree it is escalation in terms of his premeditation but I’m not sure that’s what the audience is getting. I also think productions have to reign him in or else it’s the Iago show.

But i think “honest Iago” is meant to get those laughs — do we have language to distinguish btw those moments clearly meant for laughs (& how problematic they are) & the moments that are clearly not laugh set ups that ppl laugh at — been trying to figure this out since The Globe

That’s really an important question about that needs to be examined about this play. Why is it overwhelmingly farcical where the other tragedies are not? It really has an Iago problem.
