I went to see Othello with my cousin and told her to note if there was any inappropriate laughter. Spoiler alert: there was SO much, like when Iago tells Othello to strangle her. People actually guffawed. #ShakeRace #OthelloLaugh

I wonder sometimes if it’s “what the fuck?” laughter. It is rather shocking to hear someone escalate a situation to strangling. I’ve definitely encountered pained dramatic irony laugher as Iago keeps getting called “honest Iago.”

I think laughter at those moments (and elsewhere) is often performative. Like “Behold! I am educated! Witness how cultured I am and how familiar with irony here.” It’s distressing that this attitude emerges SO strongly with Othello, much more than other plays in my experience
