A colleague has asked me for first day tips on a course that will be discussing race. Obviously, I have some suggestions but my biggest one is that the institution should have programming to help us with this when it’s not in our wheelhouse. 1/

Yes! I do that too, and it can be a good activity to have students find different definitions to see why were using the one that we are.

I spend the first day in Ethnic Lit talking to students about creating community & how work surrounding race and ethnicity often leads to silence. I challenge us to commit to two things: 1. Doing the work knowing we will screw up and 2. Commit to calling in when we make mistakes.

“This is hard work. I want us to be gentle with each other. We can’t do the work if we are so afraid of messing up that we can’t talk.”

Yes BUT this colleague could also have read the many, many books published in the past few years on how to talk about race over the summer, rather than asking for "first day tips"
