My own suggestion, given that the semester starts tomorrow and there’s not too much time for prep is to be aware of silence, hesitation, and defensiveness, which can result from a majority white classroom. Students may want to talk but feel unready 2/

Will add that universities should also be reminded that critical race studies is an actual field of scholarship, and they should hire professors with backgrounds in it to teach those courses

Yes, absolutely. It’s neo-liberal outsourcing in this case because those of my colleagues doing alit are doing so because there’s no one and they see this as important work.

Day one... pop quiz (1) what is your current opinion and bias on the class subject. (2) What are your (student) goals for the class. (3) outline ways to discuss difficult topics safely. (4) should the instructor grade this quiz, if not what should the instructor do with it?

Thanks for this! I do group work along these lines but I love the individual pop quiz idea.
