I can’t get over how New Historicism allows for intellectual leaps that tie the smallest seemingly insignificant reference in Shax to the Elizabethan or Jacobean court, yet doesn’t allow racial language & signifiers to actually mean what they say. #ShakeRace

Yeah as someone who wasn’t around for the first wave of NH (which I generally love, tbqh), it’s wild to see how comparentalized the critiques can be.

I'm not sure it's a deliberate elision as much as a blind spot. Or a lack of interest. Or a strategic decision to focus on gender roles (or whatever) rather than on race; or really, on Oberon and Titania rather than the boy.

I think calling him the boy throughout rather than the Indian boy is deliberate.
