When ppl say this I truly believe what they mean is their ethnicity wasn't an issue or point of conflict. So therefore it wasn't at the forefront.https://twitter.com/originalspin/status/1136704433704726528 …
I agree, that these conflicts were rooted in the Asian cultures being represented. But I guess I’m resistant to calling these ethnic conflicts because I think there are more transcendent points of identification.

I just don’t want to erase those unique points of difference even while embracing the larger notion of universality. I think it’s so salient that it’s a Korean dish, taught to a neglected Chinese Vietnamese girl, that makes her feel like part of an Asian family.

I absolutely don’t want to do that either. What I’m trying to say, not very well I guess, is that the film shows us through it’s careful authenticity how the narratives of so-called Others can also be universal. Thereby challenging white universality. 1/

And I think I'm uncomfortable with this idea that media that is created with an intended culture in mind needs to somehow transcend. It's a bit too close to still serving the white masses and making sure they are comfortable. Everyone doesn't have to be centered in everything.
