Some people don’t have other financial options and a job on the CV looks better than a long gap.
Absolutely, but the shrinking of TT jobs and higher numbers of PhDs means that there will always be folks who need to take that job. The focus should be on institutions to behave ethically re: remuneration toward contingent labor.

Cant we have multiple related objectives. Treating contingent faculty fairly and reducing their numbers through FT and TT hiring can be complimentary strategies.

Absolutely, we can and should. We have to counter the neoliberal thinking that makes the victim of the corporate system into the problem.
