Giving a paper at #RenSA19, actually delivering it formally and having an audience who engaged with that paper and with the panel was FUN. It was incredibly enlivening to my work and my sense of *community* in that work. 2/8

My seminar at
#SAA2019 was made of an incredible group of people, thoughtful and deeply engaged. And yet, the experience lacked something that was present in the more formal setting. 3/82 vastausta 0 uudelleentwiittausta 9 tykkäystäNäytä tämä ketju -
So I would like to propose that
#SAA2021 or perhaps 2022 consider having more panels. At the moment, SAA conferences feel like there is a kind of star system. Either one is already a star and will give a paper, or one is made a star by giving a paper. 4/82 vastausta 0 uudelleentwiittausta 30 tykkäystäNäytä tämä ketju -
RSA's process is not star making. I like that. It is democratic. Propose a good paper, a good panel, something thoughtful, something engaged. And you will give that paper. I would love to see SAA become more like that. I think it would go a long way toward eliminating much 5/8

of the alienation participants speak of. I take nothing away from those who have delivered papers at SAA in the past, but I would like to see a move toward a more democratic, more widely participatory format in the future. 6/8

#SAAllies did so much for community building. Can we gain even more by drawing more participants into the opportunity to share their work formally, to present it and have it heard by more people than can fit into a seminar room? 7/81 vastaus 0 uudelleentwiittausta 15 tykkäystäNäytä tämä ketju -
SAA doesn't have to be as big as RSA, but it could expand panel offerings without becoming that big. This would likely mean fewer seminars. It would mean simultaneous panels and making choices. But don't all conferences mean that? I think it would be worth it. 7/8

That's such an interesting response, Jess, My experience as a grad student was the opposite -- seminars felt more democratic and less opaque than the paper panel system at RSA. I wonder if the massive change in the size of SAA has something to do with this feeling?

I’m sorry to hear that, but I had similar experiences at the first few SAAs I attended. I also realized that I probably wasn’t in the right seminars for the work I wanted to do. I’ve had a much better time since then.
